  5. 1.5 teaspoon chilli powder

  10. 2.5 kg chicken pieces
  11. 1 tablespoon butter
  12. 1 tablespoon olive oil

  14. 3 onions
  15. 50 g ginger
  16. 3 garlic cloves
  17. 1.5 tablespoons ground cumin
  18. 1.5 tablespoons garam masala
  19. 1 tablespoon ground coriander
  20. 1 kg tomatoes
  21. 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  22. 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  23. 2 teaspoons salt
  24. 1 can coconut milk
  25. 1 tablespoon sugar

Steps to make to make Butter chicken

  1. Marinade: Peel the ginger with a spoon. Grate the ginger finely.
  2. Peel the garlic cloves. Grate the garlic finely. You can also finely chop it.
  3. In a bowl add the plain yoghurt, grated ginger, grater garlic, chilli powder, garam masala, turmeric, ground cumin and salt. Mix.
  4. Place the chicken pieces in a container. Pour the marinade over the chicken. Marinade the chicken for at least one hour or overnight in the fridge.
  5. After the chicken marinates. Remove from fridge and leave out for a few minutes to warm up.
  6. Heat a pan with butter and oil. Grill the chicken pieces on both sides for a few minutes. Place in a oven safe bowl and keep warm in a low oven. Do not clean the pan use the same pan for the sauce.
  7. Roughly chop the onions. Fry chopped onion in the chicken pan.
  8. Peel and grate the ginger and garlic. Add the gated ginger and garlic to the onions. Fry for a few minutes.
  9. Add the garam masala, ground cumin and ground coriander. Fry for a few minutes.
  10. Roughly chop the tomatoes and add to the onions. Add the tomato paste.
  11. Add the chilli powder, salt and sugar and fry for 10 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft.
  12. Remove the pan from the heat and blend the sauce in a blender or with a stick blender.
  13. Pour the sauce back into the pan. Add the coconut milk and mix. Add the chicken pieces and cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked.
  14. Serve with basmati rice and homemade garlic naan bread.
